This is an antique Colt London Model 1851 Navy 2nd Model Percussion Revolver. This is a 6 shot .36 caliber percussion revolver that was made in London in 1854. It has a 7-1/2” octagon barrel with the barrel address reading -ADDRESS COL COLT LONDON-. The front sight has been altered. This model is found with a steel grip frame as opposed to the more common brass. The scroll engraving on the cylinder is nearly all visible. London proof marks can be found on the cylinder and barrel. There are numerous handling dings found throughout with some with some original finish still found in protected areas. The grip are in good condition with handling dings found throughout. This is an all numbers matching revolver with matching serial numbers found on the barrel, loading lever, barrel wedge, cylinder, cylinder arbor, frame, trigger guard and grip strap. Mechanically this revolver is in very fine condition with proper timing and lockup.
This was Colt’s second most produced percussion revolver and most popular in the .36 caliber with over 200000 being made in USA and another 42000 of these revolvers that were made in London. The Colt 1851 was a favourite among almost everyone who ever carried it and could be found being carried by soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee were both known to rely on the 1851’s. This 1851 would look just as good on a mantle as it would in a holster and would make a beautiful addition to any collection.
