Webley "RIC No. 2", .450 / 455 Webley Revolver Mark 2.

This "RIC No. 2" is in excellent condition. It has the original shiny blue. The action is strong and accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly. The bore of the 3 1/2 inch barrel is very fine and bright, with sharp rifling. The walnut grip is fine and undamaged, with sharp checkering. The No. 2 is different from the first RIC in so far that it has a ramped barrel thicker top strap with grooved rear sight, and a more pronounced hump at the top of the grip. There is also a more obvious curve in the grip compared to the RIC No. 1 and MP models. SN 10869.

History & Background

Philip Webley ran a small shop in the gun quarter of Birmingham, making percussion revolvers and later cartridge revolvers, with a double-action model available as early as 1867. There was no official model name, and today collectors refer to them as “Pre-RIC”. In 1868 Webley managed to secure a contract of 1000 pieces with the Royal Irish Constabulary, and the previously generic revolver became the Webley RIC. Webley went from a small artisan to a large, state-of-the-art manufacturer, turning out hundreds of guns every week. The RIC would undergo several modifications over the 25 years of manufacture: RIC No. 1 1st and 2nd pattern, RIC No. 1 New Model, RIC No. 2, RIC Model/82, MP, and RIC Model/83. Although Webley solid-frame revolvers were still being assembled well into the 20th century from parts in inventory, Webley bought no frames after 1893.
