The M/1883 Reichsrevolver, also known as the "Officer's model" was introduced as an improvement upon the reliable but heavy M/1879 Reichsrevolver issued to German infantry. These iconic revolvers were unique in that they featured a safety lever that prevents the hammer from being cocked when engaged. The dependable and German-engineering-precise single action design allowed for consistent performance with 10.55mm (.44 Russian) bullets in the 4 5/8" barrel. These antique revolvers were made from 1883 to 1896, and saw action up into the first world war when they were replaced by lighter semi-auto Lugers. I have ammo we can work into the sale if you have PAL. Various .44 Russian rounds can be purchased online or easily reloaded with .44 Magnum/Special brass. As an antique, this revolver can be owned without any licensing or registration in Canada, and can be fired anywhere a non restricted firearm would be permissible.
This gun was made in 1884 by Erfurt, as declared by the stamps on the left side. It is SN #15xx with the serial marked in almost 10 places internal and external and last two digits ("03") on all small parts and screws. Each chamber is numbered from 1 to 6 and various other proofs and inspector marks are testament to the quality control involved in production. The surface overall is smooth and clean with a pleasing steely patina. The original walnut grips are very fine with only minor dents/dings. I did not attempt to remove the grips, as the screw appears corroded to the escutcheon.
The cylinder, hammer, action, trigger, and various moving parts work well, as German products tend to. The mechanics work with hair splitting precision and perfect tolerances; the interior shows zero wear and a clean factory sheen. A couple isolated groups of oxidation are present in the otherwise clean and strong rifling of the barrel. The original lanyard ring is present.
Overall an excellent work of mechanics and reliable single action sidearm for a quality collector.
