This is an H. ASTON Model 1842 cavalry percussion pistol made in 1847. This has a barrel length of 8-1/2” and is a .54 caliber. There is some pitting at the rear of the barrel. The brass components have turned a pleasant yellow. The wood shows light handling marks with a small crack on the left of the stock but overall all in very good condition. The lock plate reads forward of the hammer “U.S./H. ASTON” rear of the hammer “MIDDTN/CONN/1847”. Martial inspection marks can be found throughout. Both cartouche markings on the left side are clearly visible. The “JH” inspector mark on the barrel is most likely belonging to Joseph Hannis. The “NWP” cartouche belongs to Nahum W. Patch and the “WAT” cartouche belongs to William A. Thornton. Mechanically this firearm is in fine condition with solid action and strong springs.
Henry Aston produced 30000 of these pistols for the U.S. military. 3000 were purchased by the Navy with the majority of the rest being issued to cavalry units. These pistols were still in use in the American Civil War. This would make an excellent addition to any Civil War or military firearms collection.
This is an antique so no PAL is required for purchase. Buyer must 18 or older and able to prove it. Shipping is available at buyers expense. All used firearms should be inspected by a competent gunsmith prior to any form of use.
