Germany Gewehr Model 1888, this one is dated 1890. The internet says it is 7.92 x 57M smokeless. I have no first hand knowledge of these rifles having never handled one before. This one seems excellent and still has packing grease in it. I did clean it up a bit. This firearm was purchased app. 70 years ago, by the previous owner in the local surplus store, along with others. For the next 70 years, or so it was stored in his gun safe, never fired.

I can not find matching serial numbers and would expect they do not match as it is surplus. The bore is not bad for a 135 year old gun but it is not new. It is dull but shows rifling throughout. It is a very nice firearm in the world of surplus, the wood, metal and bluing are all near excellent. What I find intriguing is the barrel is shrouded. It has the original cleaning rod. It operates as expected but I do not have snap caps to test it.
