These Globeco Mohawk 555 semi auto rifles are seriously overlooked by hunters and firearms enthusiasts. Lots of people don’t even know that you can go on your next hunt with a miliary grade, super reliable, well-made gun that shoots the venerable 303 British cartridge. Others have the story wrong about this Canadian-produced gun. They say things like “a waste of s perfectly good SVT40” – as if Globeco (the manufacturer) sporterized complete, functional SVT38s and 40s. They didn’t.
Instead, in the 60’s Globe Firearms Company (formerly of Vanier Ont.) bought pretty well all the Finnish captured SVT38 and 40s that the Finnish government had. Among this lot were very small number of complete, serviceable SVT 38 and 40s – and “Globeco” sold those in the US – in their original state.
However, the vast majority of these guns had broken stocks (a weak point in the SVT 40 design) and these guns – mostly captured in the Winter War – had shot corrosive ammo and had been stored without cleaning; so the bores were rotted out. However, this enterprising firm bought a supply of brand, new war surplus #1 MkIII Lee Enfield barrels and had them fitted to the SVT 40 type receivers. The mags were modified to handle 5 and 10 rounds of 303 British. The highly adjustable gas system was also revised to handle the less powerful 303 British round and new sporting stocks were made and fitted.
Most of these guns were stocked in Cooey grade wood – but a tiny percentage of guns mated the best of the available actions to a custom quality birdseye maple stock. The gun I’m selling is one of the rare Super Deluxe Mohawk 555 guns.
These guns generally were sold in the ‘60s and ‘70s without the supply of the gas adjustment tool – which is essential to be able to tune the gun to your loads and required for cleaning. No one in the day knew how to clean an SVT type action. Many were shot using corrosive ammo, and left in a cupboard, uncleaned. Any stories you've heard about these guns being unreliable relate to the fact that – in the 60’s and 70’s – lots of bubba-type owners didn't have a clue how to adjust the gas system and may have rotted the heck out of their gun.
My Super Deluxe Mohawk was a unicorn gun that was purchased from an estate, unfired when I got it. If have used it and it is 100% reliable. It comes with one Globeco 5 round magazine and the gas adjustment/ take-down tool.
This is as reliable as any SVT40 – great in harsh winter conditions. Buyer pays shipping, via UPS.
