A unique, accurate replica of the sniper rifle most commonly used by Canadian Corps soldiers in WWI. The scope bases were recreated from original photos and fitted using the original specifications supplied by Winchester for their A5 scope.
The bases are screwed and soldered to the barrel and receiver. The rifle was cut down long before I bought it about forty years ago. Fortunately it was cut in exactly the same way as the rifles the A5 scope fitted to in WWI. The stock is quite roughly cut at the band and is exactly as found and typical of rifles modified in the field.
The best account of using these rifles is in the book "In The Trenches, 1914-1918" by Frank Iriam, sniper of the 8th Battalion C.E.F. One of the greatest and most honest WWI memoirs ever published.
Unlike most Ross Mk.IIIs the chamber of this rifle was never enlarged and the bore is like new. The bolt shows original case colour and bluing is overall excellent and original.
There are no unit markings on the stock and the rifle is dated 1916.
The scope is also in excellent, hardly used condition. The A5 scope slides in the rings which is why they are seen in different positions in the photos; the rings however are in the same positions in all cases.
The rifle had no backsight when purchased and original photos show no front or back sights on the rifles fitted with the A5 scope.
NB: stock cross-bolt projects above wood because it was loose when photos were taken. Tightened it is about 1/16" deep on both sides.
