This ALL ORIGINAL Marlin 1895 that left the Marlin factory in Connecticut in 1903 has a number of factory extra cost options. The wood which is factory serial numbered is an extra fancy option , although not specified in the factory letter. This practice was common. The barrel is an extra cost half octagon-half round option as noted in the letter. The magazine tube is a half length version. The factory letter confirms much of the above. All the metal action components , and butt-plate are identified with factory stamped serial numbers.
The 1895 Marlin was a contemporary of the 1886 Winchester and available in most of the same chamberings, however only 18,000 of the Marlins were ever produced while Winchester produced roughly 180,000 model 1886's! This makes the Marlin 1895 a bit rarer.
The 38-56 while not a factory produced load anymore can be handloaded. It is of the same power level as the 35 Remington. Dies are available, as are lead cast bullets and cases can be easily made from 45-70 Gov. cases. This makes for an interesting project if desired.
