Beautiful 1871 rolling block in 50-70 govt!
American made for an American soldier, in America… by Remington, of course!
This particular one is a military rifle of the New York State militia. Often recognized by its long hammer spur. Which I find is extremely comfortable and wish it was common on other rolling blocks. Unfortunately, this design of spur is only found on the NY state model. Along with the hammer spur, they also have a unique difference in its action that only these specific rifles have; you will only see this on New York State Militia rifles.
The difference is minor, but for precautionary or practical safety purposes, it is paramount and is unmatched when compared to a typical and relatively safe action of a traditional rolling block. When the hammer is cocked past the safety notch, ( to the second notch) commonly referred to as “full cock” or the “loading notch” , the rolling breach block is released and is now able to move backwards to load a round in the chamber. The difference is, once you begin to roll the breech backwards you hear a “click” and the hammer moves slightly forward; once you load the cartridge and roll the breech forward far enough, you will hear another “click” but this time the hammer and the trigger will slightly/minutely move forward. At this point, you are in a complete safety mode. The trigger will not release the hammer and the breech cannot be opened; everything is frozen. Once the hammer is cocked back a short distance It will reach the “full cocked” notch and will now be ready to shoot, or load/unload the cartridge. This process will be repeated for every shot. Personally, I like this feature and don’t mind it at all, it could prevent someone from taking a premature shot by accident. Also, it was said that Remington offered this feature as an upgrade to buyers who wanted it, but shortly after they discontinued the option because it was too costly and timely to install as work was ramping up with all the contracts that needed to be fulfilled. The traditional action was much simpler which made production times much shorter.I think I even heard that Remington discovered that they were actually losing money on providing this service which ultimately led to the cancellation of the optional upgrade.
