Purchased this rifle from Joe Salter @ Down East Trading about 11 years ago below is the original description from Joe, It is accurate.

Scarce Winchester Model 70 in 300 H&H caliber built in 1937.  This Winchester remains in its' original configuration as manufactured with a  26" barrel 95% plus original blue with a bright excellent bore. Both the underside of the barrel and the original wood show the 1937 date.  This early production rifle shows the early style of barrel tang as found on the Model 54.  This rifle shows the correct factory tapped holes on the receiver and receiver ring.  The ring is correctly matted which was standard for the early guns. This rifle is one of the transition rifles as referred to on various works on the Model 70.  This piece was built in 1937 as per the factory marking on the barrel and stock.  As per the Madis referenced serial number it falls into the 1938 production.  Due to the caliber and special features such as the tapping it may well have been one of the production rifles held in the custom shop prior to finishing and shipping. This example shows all original blue on the metal with clear crisp stampings.  The left side of the barrel shows some staining between the front sight and the rear site base. This was probably caused by poor storage.  The rear sight was removed at some time and a Lyman Model 48 was aftermarket installed on the receiver.  The bolt shows the correct matching number on the underside.  The mag cover shows some edge wear.  The original stock shows the inlet in the wood to accommodate the receiver sight.  It shows excellent checkering and evidence of some added oil finish. This is a relatively scarce rifle to locate especially in Canada.  It is one of only 2812 Model 70 rifles built in 300 H&H from 1936 to 1943.  In addition the survival rate on the early Winchester 70's is relatively low.  This item is one for the Model 70, Winchester collector or  the serious bolt gun collector.

I have a set of new RCBS dies and 49 Once fired Hornady brass for an additional $150.00. Only been out of the safe twice in 10 years. Uses the standard .308 / 30 caliber bullet.
